Profile

Barellan Point is rich in history. Before 1800 aboriginees from the Yuggera tribe roamed the area searching for food. In 1824 John Oxley and Alan Cunningham rowed past the Junction at Karalee, named the Bremer River and camped on the banks of the river opposite the Junction.

The Brisbane and Bremer Rivers were very important in the development of the early city of Ipswich as an inland port for trade between Brisbane, Ipswich and the rich Darling Downs. River trade was so important that in 1865 the Department of Harbours and Marines began construction of a sandstone wall to dam the Brisbane River and make the Bremer River the most important river. Construction of the wall was never completed and it was not until after the 1974 flood that this wall was exposed at Karalee. During World War 2, an airfield was built at Karalee to be used should Amberley Airforce Base be bombed or conjested.

In 1969 developers began buying up the dairy farms in Karalee and Barellan Point and dividing the land into small acreage building blocks.
